International competition for pianists who live or study full-time in North America.
- Applicants must have reached their 15th birthday by June 7, 2012, but not their 21st birthday by June 13, 2012.
- Applicants are ineligible to compete for the following reasons:
- a PianoArts judge was his or her primary teacher during the two years preceding June 7, 2012
- a 2012 judge coached the contestant for the competition
- contestant studies with a relative of a 2012 judge
- contestant has been accepted as a student of a 2012 judge
- Contestants must be living or attending school in North America and be available for Milwaukee performances if they are selected as PianoArts winners.
- Contestants may be citizens of countries outside North America.
- Contestants must be able to speak and communicate in English.
- Former PianoArts Winners of the First Place Prize are ineligible.

- Semifinal contestants must agree to have no other commitments from June 7 through June 14 at 12:00 noon and to participate in all scheduled activities.
- Contestants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Milwaukee.
- Host families with practice facilities will be available for contestants.
- During the competition, contestants will be known by their first names. Judges will not receive background information on the competitors.
- During the competition, contestants may not speak to the judges. Contestants will have individual conferences with each judge following the semifinal or final rounds.
- PianoArts can use photographs of contestants in flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, on the internet, and Facebook.
- Contestants must grant permission for part or all of their performances in the competition to be electronically recorded or videotaped for distribution – live, tape-delayed, or by future transmission all media. Contestants can make no claim for any funds that may accrue to PianoArts as a result of using these materials.
- Personal audio and/or visual recordings of the competition must be approved in advance by PianoArts. PianoArts will provide professional photographers and videographers. With approval of PianoArts, photographs and audio/visual materials
will be available for use by contestants.
- All decisions by the judges will be final.
