Jean Barr

A native of Thiensville, Wisconsin, Jean Barr is

Professor of Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music, and Co-Chair of the Chamber Music Department at the Eastman School of Music. The first keyboard aratist in mthe United States to be awarded a doctoral degree in accompanying, she studied at the University of

Southern Californai with Gwendolyn Koldofsky and Northwestern University with Gui Mombaerts

At the outset of her career she was accompanist for the master classes of Jascha Heifetz, Gregor Piatigorsky, William Primrose and Martial Singher.

As a collaborative pianist, Jean Barr has performed throughout the United States and abroad with many distinguished artists. In demand as a guest lecturer and master teacher, she reguarly gives classes

 

throughout the the United States and the world. Co-chair of a year of collaborative music sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, Ms. Barr organized a host of chamber music concerts that culminated with a day devoted to collaborative performance at the 2011 conference. Her sessions included Collaborative Pianists: From Past to Present, and From Page to Stage. ?In the past decade she has also organized  significant chamber music concerts for the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy and other international organizations.

Considered by many to be a pioneer in her field, Jean Barr has engendered a broad appreciation of the collaborative arts. In 1994, the Eastman School of Music honored Jean Barr with the prestigious Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching, and in 2004 the University of Rochester awarded her the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award.

Judit Jaimes

Known for her performances as guest artist with symphony orchestras and as a chamber musician par excellence, Ms. Jaimes is acclaimed by international audiences and critics for her gift of communication and poetic sensitivity. She has performed with orchestras the world over and toured extensively throughout South and Central America, South Africa, Europe, and the United States. Included in her tours are appearances in the world's leading music festivals and recital in renowned concert halls.

Among her numerous international television and radio broadcasts are those on BBC London, BBC Manchester, TV Warsaw, WFMT Chicago, WNYC New York, Radio TV Caracas, Amsterdam Radio, Radio Hilversum in Holland and Wisconsin Public Radio.

 

Ms. Jaimes is a much sougth-out artist amd clinician. She is Professor Emeritus of Piano and Chamber Music and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

In 1999, the Venezuelan government honored her for contributions to her country's cultural image with a commendation from the President of Venezuela, the revered National Music Award. In 2005, she was honored by the Foundation of Venezuelan Youth Orchestras, Venezuela's most important musical institution, with

a Life Achievement in the Arts Award

Ludmila Lazar

Pianist and master teacher Ludmila Lazar is acknowledged internationally for her stylistic versatility and intense musicality. Acclaimed in Europe and the United States for her commitment to a diverse and challenging repertoire, Dr. Lazar's recitals and workshops reflect her involvement with multi-cultural music and authentic performance practice. Chicago critics describe Dr. Lazar's playing as "inspirational and informative."

Her students have been winners in local, regional, national, and international competitions. In recognition of her teaching, she received the Master Teacher Certificate from the Music Teachers National Association, and was awarded the title of Master Teacher by the American Musical Scholarship Association. She was also elected by the Roosevelt University community as "Outstanding Teacher of the Year."

 

Dr. Lazar's notable achievements have secured her a place of recognition with the American Keyboard Artists and the Who's Who in the American Music World.

Margaret (Peggy) Otwell

Dr. Otwell will serve as the PianoArts 2012 Preliminary Round Non-Voting Chair. She is Assistant Chair of the Music Department at Mount Mary College, where she is developing a new Bachelor of Arts degree program in piano pedagogy.

She also serves on the piano faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Prior to returning to her performing and teaching career in the 2006-2007 season, Dr. Otwell was Director of Educational Keyboard Publications at Hal Leonard, a position that she held for eight years. She is a member of the PianoArts Advisory Board.

 

 

Dr. Otwell has served on faculties of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, American University Preparatory Department, and George Mason University. She has given lecture-recitals, workshops, and master classes, and has appeared in solo and chamber music performances throughout the United States and in Europe.

Semifinal and Final Competition Jury – Pavlina Dokovska, James Giles, Julian Martin

Pavlina Dokovska.

First prize winner of the Claude Debussy International Competition in France and Italy’s International Piano Competition of Senigallia, Pavlina Dokovska's concert tours have taken her to Europe, the Far East, and throughout the United States. Among the highlights of

her performing career are concerts with the Luxembourg Philharmonic, debuts at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, the National Theater in Beijing, and Prague’s Autumn Festival. In New York City, she has appeared in several top halls, including Avery Fisher Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and Merkin Hall.

A sought-after soloist with American orchestras, she also performs regularly in her native Bulgaria as recitalist and soloist with all the major orchestras, including the Sofia Philharmonic and Radio Symphony. She has recorded albums of French music, an all-Schumann compact disc,and piano concertos by Prokofiev, Liszt, and Scriabin with the Bulgarian Radio Symphony.

 

 

Ms. Dokovska joined the faculty of the Mannes College of Music in New York in 1995. Three years later she was elected chair of the piano department, a position she holds to date. In 1999, she founded and became artistic director of the annual Mannes Festival, which grew into a staple of New York’s musical life with about twenty concerts at some of the city’s major venues.

James Giles

James Giles regularly performs to acclaim in important musical centers in America, Europe, and Asia. Recent tours have included concerts in China, England, Russia, and Bosnia. This season he will perform at the Nancy Music Festival in France, the Accademia Cristofori in Florence, and the Beijing International Music Festival. He will also teach master classes at the Chautauqua Music Festival in New York, the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and the Royal College of Music in London.

Dr. Giles was the recipient of a fellowship grant and the Christel Award from the American Pianists Association and now serves on the APA’s National Advisory Board. He won first prizes at the New Orleans International Piano Competition, the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, and the Music Teachers National Association Competition.

 

 

Dr. Giles is coordinator of the piano program at Northwestern University and chair of the piano department at the Eastern Music Festival during the summers. He gives master classes and lectures at universities nationwide and has taught during the summers at Brevard, ARIA, and the Schlern Festival in Italy. He has been a guest professor at the Sibelius Academy,

the Shanghai Conservatory, and at Indiana University.

Julian Martin

Julian Martin has been on The Juilliard School faculty since 1999. He was the 1975 winner of the Montevideo International Competition, and a major prizewinner at the Casadesus, Kapell, and Bachauer competitions.

Mr. Martin is a juror for many international competitions, in North America, Colombia, and Korea, and was on the awards panel Virtuosi of The Year 2000 in St. Petersburg. He is an original member of the Gilmore Foundation's Selection Committee in Kalamazoo, and is founder and artistic director of Gijón International Piano Festival (Asturias, Spain).

 

 

He has been guest faculty at the Glenn Gould Professional School (Toronto), the Conservatoire Tibor Varga (Switzerland), and the Banff Centre (Alberta). He recently gave master classes in Great Britain, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Venezuela, and Israel.
